The Celluloid Records Story -  If you know, than you know. Thanks to @StrutRecords, a slew of the legendary music of Celluloid Records has been unearthed with their album “Change The Beat: The Celluloid Records Story 1979-1987”, most of it produced by Bill Laswell. These mini documentaries accompany the album.

Part 2 (below) has some amazing highlights, including a story about Bill Laswell going to see Mick Jagger with Grand Mixer DXT, and how he went to the Tuscany countryside to talk to Ginger Baker to convince him to play with John Lydon on the Public Image Ltd. album “P.I.L.” Yes, he succeeded.

You also get to hear DXT talk about what it was like to DJ at the legendary Roxy, and how he revolutionized the word “FRESH” in a little song by Herbie Hancock called “Rockit” that won a Grammy.

I should use this opportunity to dig up the recording of when I had Grandmixer DXT on my radio show a while back, but I’ll leave that for another day…

Holy Mazola! Super-snappy claps out to my man Jazzy Jay, and savory nibblins to Dangerous Minds.

“NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell” - This film originally aired on VH-1. It’s one of the best NYC docs I’ve ever seen. Definitely watch this in it’s entirety when you get a chance. Big spanks to Ego Trip for hipping me to the fact that this whole movie is on-line now.

I’m pretty obsessed with this time period in New York’s history. The madness of this one year gave birth to some of the most amazing artistic output the world has ever seen, and laid the groundwork for influencers like Basquiat, Blondie, Madonna, The Talking Heads, Afrika Bambaataa, Keith Haring and more. If you’re not aware of what went down in 1977 in NYC, prepare have your wig go splodey.

The film features interviews with Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, Chris Stein (Blondie), KRS-One, Ed Koch, Mel Cheren, Frankie Knuckles and tons of other NY77 alumni.

NY 77: The Coolest Year In Hell - Part 1 - Thanks to @peteroasis for the tip. This documentary aired on VH-1 a couple of years back. It’s SUPERB.
