Cousins - “Boudha” - Let’s get exotic folks. Makes me want to hop a plane to Thailand.

Living Colour - “Solace Of You” - I was eating this up weekly in 1990.

“This Is Ska”  is a 1964 documentary on Ska music, which gave birth to Reggae, and is often overlooked as a hinge that much popular music hangs on.

Big crunch cakes out to Dangerous Minds for the tip.

Doing a guest DJ Set on @FortyDeuceNYC on @EVRadio today at 6pm. Large Professor is a regular DJ on the show, along with a cast of serious beat-heads, so I plan on coming with some real grit. Shouts to Geebee (of the legendary Stimulated Dummies) and Keene (Team), who host the show.Link To Forty Deuce On East Village Radio

Front all you want on Bobby McFerrin, but that boy can SANG, and SCAT too. When I was like nine years old, my mom used to take me and my brother and sister to see Bobby McFerrin at the Boston Symphony Hall. These were some of my earliest music shows, if not the first ones ever. To say I was blown away, just doesn’t cut it. I had no real idea about jazz, skat, and vocal range, so I was just getting schooled on so many things I never knew about. When “Don’t worry, be happy” came out, and everyone was hating, I was just thinking “damn, these people have no idea that this dude is a straight bad-ass jazz cat”.

If you really think you know Bobby McFerrin from “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, go get his first album (that the song above is on). You will be fully converted, I trust. There’s a sick version of Van Morrison’s  “Moondance” on there. Classic.

Years later, I became friendly with Taylor McFerrin (Bobby’s son). Taylor is also ultra-talented. He’s got some crazy vocal chops (singing and beat-boxing), but he’s also an established electronic musician, and beat-maker.

In addition, I have a slew of work with beat-boxers. As I got more into their world, I realized how much of an influence, Bobby had on them as well.

This cat singing (Anthony Mills) used to sing songs in my living room. He used to stay with us for a while, back when I was in Bed Stuy, sandwiched between a Hassidic school/park, a charter bus yard, an empty lot and The Phizer building/The Marcy Projects.

He used to work with my old room mate DJ Kiva on music. Some of the songs on the album below were sung over and over in my living room. When I saw that Anthony linked up with (bad-ass producer) Red Astaire aka Freddie Cruger for this project, I immediately copped this.

I’ve been talking with Anthony lately, and we’re working on getting these guys out here soon from Europe. New York needs this right heah…

Below the stream, there’s a picture of the mural my man Kiva did on the roof of my old spot. We used to throw the ill film-festivals and jams on the roof with this big PYRAMID SOUND SYSTEM. Good memories.

The song above, coupled with the video, is so intense. I love herion(e) music.
