RIP To Sylvia Robinson.
The New York Times proclaims “Sylvia Robinson, The Mother of Hip-Hop Dies”
Sugar Hill Records can not be denied their place in the evolution of DJ Culture and Hip-Hop.
The 2006 box Set with some remix work by my man Steinski and cuts by the thunion DJ Signify was awe inspiring, and pretty baffling. So much music came out of Sugar Hill. And a lot of it was good, in my opinion.
The thing that strikes me most about the Sugar Hill Records, is the way they fused the technology of the time with the classic bass, guitar and other traditional instrument sounds. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how 80s Hip-Hop actually had GUITAR SOLOS. It bugs me out to think that you SO RARELY hear a solo of any kind in today’s music. Who will step up to the plate with this? I challenge you.
Back to Sylvia, who people would argue was the lifeblood, or death-syrum in Hip-Hop’s evolution. I personally would never discount the importance and dedication I see in Sylvia and Sugar Hill’s work output. Salute to you, m’lady!

Neil Armstrong ( @DJNeilArmstrong ) has been my dude for many years now. Since before he released his legendary “Sweet”, “Bittersweet” and “2Orginal” CDs. Since Before he became Jay-Z’s tour DJ (he’s not, anymore). Since before he became the official DJ for Adidas. Since before we DJ’d together…and he’s still my dude now.
Last week, Neil stopped in to my SYNERGY party to say what up to DJ Iron Lyon, who was celebrating his birthday. He laced me with this new CD. Now, I usually only play CDs when I’m in a car that only has a CD player at this point. And low and behold, this weekend, I found myself in one. I popped in the CD, and found a well presented mix of commercial/pop tunes from the 80s and 90s, with Neil’s signature movie dialog layered over the top.
This mix is so Filipino, it’s not even funny. My wife was laughing, cause almost all the songs were songs her (Filipino) mother loves. I love them too though, so there you go. I have a big affinity for 80s pop, as I grew up listening to it, and there’s plenty of it on here. I actually play a lot of these songs.
Check the sample of the mix above, and go grab it at Neil Armstrong’s site.

The Weird World of Blowfly Trailer (2011)
Check the (quite funny) interview I did with Blowfly for Frank151 Chapter 28: Miami. One of the first parties I ever worked on for Frank151 was the release party for that chapter. We did the event at The Shore Club in Miami (where Suge Knight was robbed and shot in the leg in 2005). Legendary NYC promoter Bill Spector helped us promote it, and Blowfly just came through and hosted/partied with us. It was such a bizarre experience, as any experience with Blowfly should be.
I spoke with Bill about it recently, and he said The Shore Club wanted to kick Blowfly out. I asked if it was warranted, and Bill proclaimed that he didn’t think so at all. He said he’d had some talent do way worse up in the rooms and cabanas of The Shore Club before. I can only imagine…
Look out for this Blowfly Documentary. There’s no one else like him.
Acclaimed Miami musician Clarence Reid could easily be your cranky grandfather… until he puts on the gold-spangled superhero costume of his alter ego, Blowfly, and starts singing some of the filthiest songs you’ve ever heard in your life. A major force in the Miami soul scene of the 60s and 70s, Reid wrote Top-10 songs for some of the greatest R&B acts of the era, while at the same time, his X-rated recordings and stage antics as Blowfly made him a star of the “party record” scene. Having changed the game in 1965 with what might be the world’s first rap song, Blowfly has shocked and grooved audiences for over forty years since. Today, he is still on tour, struggling for success and recognition after 50 years of making music. An intimate and revealing portrait, The Weird World of Blowfly celebrates Reid’s musical and cultural significance, and paints a picture of an unheralded, hilarious, and stunningly profane man that is as touching as it is obscene.

R.I.P. Nick Ashford (Ashford & Simpson). He was a sparkly-looking dude, huh?
My DJ Set On Forty Deuce/EVR Radio 8-4-11

Yesterday, I caught wreck with some old soul/r&b breaks, and classic hip-hop on my boy’s show Forty Deuce. Forty Deuce is a show that’s done by my mans Geebee (used to be a partners with Dante Ross in their Stimulated Dummies production crew), and my dude Keene Carse AKA TEAM. He’s kind of a legendary graf dude. There’s a picture above of a piece he did for his old Ska/Hardcore band Urban Blight. Check the archive here.
About halfway through, this 17 year old dude named WIKI caught COMPLETE WRECK on the mic. Never seen a youngun freestyle that well. Listen for it.
